Pilots Volunteer To Transport Animals To New Homes

Last week I posted about Operation Roger, a dedicated group of truckers who volunteer their time and space to transporting needy animals across country to new homes. As I wrote and researched the post I became aware of other organizations who provide similar services including one that provides air service. While some of us enjoy flying, most dogs do not.

But a group of volunteer pilots make them as comfortable as possible when they are flying across country in the hopes of finding a new and permanent home. Animal Rescue Flights is a non-profit organization that  consists of hundreds of volunteers, many of whom are pilots, dedicated to arranging and transporting animals from shelters where they are facing imminent euthanasia to no-kill shelters , rescue groups, or families who have a place in their hearts and room for another family member. National Geographic did a segment about one such recipient , Rebel, of the services of this organization.Teaming up with another rescue group, Rescue Ink, a badly injured dog makes his way from Kentucky to a new home in New York.

There is a massive amount of work involved in just organizing such efforts. Neal Boortz, a talk show host and pilot, has made a public service announcement to help ARF recruit members. The enormity of the job requires many, many volunteers. Pilots of course are always needed, but so are Flight Coordinators, people to recieve and send the animals, and people with organizational skills. If you would like to volunteer , they can use your help.
