It’s summer and we’re hot down here in Texas. And when we are hot, thoughts turn to water. Watch this very short video to see a great example of the sport.
Here is a water sport that nearly everyone can enjoy if they have a dog that enjoys the water.
Dock Dog competition has become quite a popular competitive sport.Though not yet sanctioned by the AKC, I wouldn’t be surprised if it became an AKC recognized competition. Just a matter of time.
Here is how it works. The dog jumps off the diving board into a pool, generally to fetch an object like a Frisbee or ball. It is not necessary to actually throw an object to entice them to jump off the board, but it seems like that is the approach most people use. The distance is measured from the end of the board to where the base of the tail hits the water. Basically it is the equivalent of a human long jump. But a little longer. Many jump over 15 feet!
The dog that jumps the longest distance in the pool wins. All jumps are evaluated electronically using stop-action technology at national competitions. At club events the jumps can be measured manually. Various titles can be acquired and they variations on this, such as a competition for the highest vertical jump.
Cool sport, isn’t it?
